A dive into the sounds of bluegrass and folk rock and a departure from Lost Ox’s previous funk and blues explorations, “After the Flood” is the first single from Lost Ox’s upcoming album, Tale of the Fool. The song, written by guitarist and singer Dylan DiSalvio, kicks off with a raucous folk-rock groove with tasteful mandolin accompaniment, but quickly settles into an uptime backbeat. “The lyrics”, DiSalvio explains, are “a joyous celebration of chaotic times. We wanted to capture some of our favorite sounds from the 60’s folk rock revolution that has influenced us so much, but with a more modern spin and message.” After some fine picking by DiSalvio on acoustic guitar and guest artist Josiah Payne on mandolin, the tune segues into a moody psychedelic bridge featuring electric guitar – but before we know it, we find ourselves back, and as the tune concludes the verse is transformed into a refrain, stylized with some post-apocalyptical lyrical musings and the bittersweet vibe from before. Both familiar and new, “After the Flood” is a timeless song for the times.
